Emma Raducanu is into the second round of the
Madrid Open after a straight sets victory over Suzan Lamens, it was her first match since her run to the Quarter-Finals of the Miami Open.
Raducanu lauded her strength of getting stuck in after her first set which saw her have to come through a tough tie-break winning the match 7-6(4), 6-4.
The British No.2 took a physical and mental break after the Miami Open run and was fresh and ready to go in this tie. She now faces Marta Kostyuk.
"I know I had to play really well to win and although it wasn't always my best, I got stuck in at the right moments," Raducanu said in her post-match interview."I'm proud of how I competed. It is a strength of mine when I can use it."
She continued that it does take some getting used to playing on a surface that is 'foreign' to her and that she still has some more in the tank.
"It’s for sure different stepping into the competition, especially on clay," she said. "I haven’t played many matches on this surface, so it does feel a little foreign to me.
"I’m happy with how I kind of worked my way into the match. I played an opponent in great form who has won a lot of matches on clay so I knew I had to play really well to win. I don’t think I played my best level but I think I competed really well."
