While most players have been seen on social media content all week at the Olympic Games, one was absent and seemingly had not made it to Paris yet and that was Elena Rybakina. Fears about her not playing have now been confirmed as she has withdrawn due to acute bronchitis.
Rybakina who has garnered an unfortunate reputation for withdrawing from tournaments due to illness will not play at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games including with Alexander Bublik in the mixed doubles. She was due to face Jaqueline Cristian first up and a potential Quarter-Final with Qinwen Zheng in a pretty rough draw.
But she has not made it to Paris at all withdrawing from the tournament. She was seen soaking up the sun on holiday in Turkey. John Horn, a prominent reporter announced the news this morning but it was confirmed this afternoon officially that she won't play and doctors forbade her from travelling.
"At the moment Elena is suffering from acute bronchitis, and doctors have categorically forbidden her not only to go on the court, but also to fly to the competitions. Rybakina was actively preparing for the games, expecting to demonstrate a high level of play at the Olympics, but because of her illness it became impossible," a statement said from the Kazakh Tennis Federation translated.
"The Tennis Federation of Kazakhstan sincerely wishes Elena a speedy recovery and a successful return to the court. We believe in her strength and look forward to her return to training and competition."
Home hope Caroline Garcia now becomes a seed and the draw alters. She will play Cristian now with the winner facing Naomi Osaka or Angelique Kerber. Also in that section includes Muchova v Fernandez and Qinwen Zheng opens up against Daria Saville. It is another unfortunate withdrawal for the tournament with Jannik Sinner and Holger Rune on the men's side both out due to injury.
Now Rybakina is the latest big name who joins Aryna Sabalenka who is not playing at all on the sidelines from Olympic action and further strengthens Swiatek's chances too who is the other seed in her section and would've likely met Rybakina in the semi-finals.

Elena Rybakina withdraws from the Olympic Games. Caroline Garcia moves Rybakina’s seeded spot and avoids Zheng in R1. Alternate Daria Saville gets Zheng. This is how that section of the draw is looking now:
