Serena Williams announced in Vogue magazine that she is starting to 'evolve' away from tennis. Although there is no sufficient evidence there is a lot of speculation that the
US Open could be her final tournament.
Even though this would be an incredible Grand Slam to finish her very successful career on a certain ex world number 1 doesn't believe it will be a celebratory finish.
"Emotions can only carry you so far, I don’t see a Cinderella happy ending where she wins the tournament. The way she has looked it doesn’t look like she is going to make a miraculous comeback and win the tournament,” Navratilova commented.
The 23 time Grand Slam champion hasn't been showing this kind of form over recent months hence why Navratilova might believe that Williams could be unsuccessful at the US Open.
There has been a lack of playing time for the American with her only playing at two single tournaments and getting just the one victory which was against Nuria Parrizas-Diaz in the first round of the Canadian Open.
However if Williams is successful in the US Open this year she would tie with Margaret Court in winning the most major titles in history. Although she would have to go one further than her last Grand Slam final in 2019 when she lost in straight sets to Bianca Andreescu.
Navratilova may find it difficult to see success for Serena Williams but she says “ with the stress of knowing this is likely your last tournament it doesn’t help.“ But if anyone can overcome it would be Serena.”
It will be interesting to see how Williams gets on this tournament, her first fixture will be released on Thursday.
