Russia’s young tennis sensation
Mirra Andreeva achieves yet
another milestone. The 17-year-old is already regarded as one for the future and
has produced some impressive performances in the recent past.
Andreeva is currently taking part in the
Miami Open, where
she defeated Veronika Kudermetova in the round of 64 in straight sets with a
score of 6-0, 6-2. With that win, she becomes the first player, male or female,
to win 20 matches this year. Her closest rival in the race is the Australian Open 2025 winner, Madison Keys, and the reigning world number two, Poland’s Iga Swiatek. Both players have won 19 matches each.
The win on Friday came on the back of an outstanding outing at
the Indian Wells, where the youngster lifted the title after beating the reigning
world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the final with a score of 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Talking
after the match, Andreeva stated that she was glad to overcome the first
hurdle.
"Honestly, I felt like I still need a little bit more
time to get used to the conditions, so I just tried to put as many balls in the
court as I can, and tried to defend," she said. "She was serving
great and hitting really deep and great shots, so I just had to hang in there. But
it felt good, I'll be honest."
Andreeva will now face America’s Amanda Anisimova in the
round of 32 of the competition on Sunday. The 23-year-old defeated Egypt’s Mayar
Sherif in the round of 64 in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-2.
