Albeit taking till Thursday, the
Madrid Open has finally issued an apology amid the Women's Doubles final fiasco which saw
Victoria Azarenka/Beatriz Haddad-Maia and finalists
Coco Gauff and
Jessica Pegula denied the opportunity to speak.
They remained silent on it issuing not statement and denying interview requests with CEO Gerard Tsobanian as opposed to Feliciano Lopez, Tournament Director who himself came under criticism after cake gate also releasing a statement.
“We sincerely apologize to all players and fans who expect more of the Mutua Madrid Open tournament. Not giving our women’s doubles finalists the chance to address their fans at the end of the match was unacceptable,” the statement on Twitter read.
“We have apologized directly to Victoria, Beatriz, Coco and Jessica,” he wrote.
