Iga Swiatek was unsure how she would react once she became world number one but the Polish player has been on a tear winning a couple of matches with impressive scorelines.
The first two matches came at the Billie Jean King Cup with Swiatek dropping only a handful of games in both matches. Now, in her first match in Stuttgart, she did the same, besting Lys 6-1 6-1. Asked about the impressive scorelines, she said:
"The best tennis for me is when I don't even know what the score is. Even when I have a thought like that, I'm like, Oh my god Iga, come back to what's important. Performance is the thing I want to focus on so I don't even care about the scores."
She did say that it does give her confidence:
"For sure, they are giving me confidence and I'm pretty happy that I'm consistent and I'm not letting my opponents play their game. But honestly, it's not like I'm proud of the scores, I'm more proud of the win and the whole performance."
Swiatek was then asked about playgin as a number one and she said:
“When I’m focused & really concentrating on the tasks I have on court & on tactics, nothing changes. I’m pretty happy about that b/c I didn’t know how I’m going to react being World No.1. But matches at BJK Cup & here, they showed me I can be the same kind of player."
