Iga Swiatek won the 2022 edition of the
Qatar Open and she's back in the semi-final with only one match win as Belinda Bencic withdrew from the quarter-final.
Swiatek's impressive 2022 run started in Doha last year and this year it seems like a final is looming once again. She had a 1st round BYE and faced Danielle Collins in the second round. It was a demolition 6-0 6-1 with the Polish player booking a quarter-final. It won't be played as Belinda Bencic, who has won six matches in a row and lost only twice this year, withdrew before the contest later today.
It's unclear what the reason for the withdrawal but it could be a minor injury or simply fatigue. Swiatek will now play in the semi-final having stepped out onto the court only one. As for her tennis, she said this:
"[I felt] pretty confident. I'm happy that I was kind of
composed and from the beginning till the end pretty focused and
disciplined with tactics. I didn't really let Danielle get into the
rhythm. I wanted to be aggressive. I'm pretty happy that I did that
well."
She awaits the winner of Gauff v Kudermetova.
