Paula Badosa secured her first victory of 2025 at the WTA 500 Adelaide International in a challenging match against American Peyton Stearns. The Spaniard had to rally from a set down to triumph 6-7, 6-3, 7-5.
The first set was closely contested, with both players struggling on serve. Stearns made fewer errors and ultimately took the set. Badosa fought hard to force a tiebreak, saving eight out of ten break points she faced while converting two of her own four opportunities. However, the tiebreak went Stearns’ way after a couple of errors from Badosa at 5-5 handed the American the edge.
In the second set, Badosa started strong with two break points but couldn't capitalize, as Stearns showed resilience. Despite leading, the world No. 12 expressed visible frustration with her game, even hitting her racket on the net after a successful break to lead 2-1. Determined to improve, she took control of the set, winning it 6-3 and shifting the momentum in her favour.
The final set mirrored the second, with Badosa starting aggressively and breaking early to go up 4-2. However, Stearns fought back to level at 4-4. In the end, the Spaniard’s experience shone through as she closed out the match 7-5, earning her place in the next round.
