The WTA
Madrid Open 2025 reaches its best moment, with only 8 players still standing looking for the title of the first WTA 1000 on clay of the season. The day of Wednesday, April 30 is loaded with storylines, the most important being the replay of the Australian semifinal between
Madison Keys and
Iga Swiatek.
The Caja Mágica is getting ready for a day of high-caliber tennis. Five of the top ten players in the world hold firm to their hopes of lifting the trophy on the clay of the Spanish capital;
Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek,
Coco Gauff, Madison Keys and
Mirra Andreeva are positioned as the tournament's top contenders, but after Wednesday at least one of them will no longer be competing due to crossings.
The following is a detailed
preview of the four matches and the chances of each of the contenders to advance to the semifinals.
Iga Swiatek - Madison Keys
Defending champion and world No. 2-ranked Iga Swiatek has a truly difficult mission at this Madrid Open. Her place as Sabalenka's immediate challenger is at stake, defending a huge amount of points in 2025, after a wonderful 2024 season.
Swiatek does not arrive in the best way, carrying a season in which she has not won titles but several painful defeats. In any case, Swiatek is the queen of clay and has been for several years, and if she is defeated it will not be without a real battle.
She will face Madison Keys, reigning Australian Open champion who reached the final in Melbourne after beating Swiatek in a dramatic match that was decided in the third set tiebreak. The number 5 is coming from defeating Donna Vekic and has yet to drop a set in the tournament. She has lost only four matches this year and won 20.
The head-to-head is interesting, with the Pole leading 4-2, losing the last match but with the peace of mind of having defeated Keys on clay at the Madrid Open 2024. The winner of this match will face the winner of the match between Gauff and Andreeva.

Mirra Andreeva - Coco Gauff
In another of the highlights of the tournament will be facing the number 4, Coco Gauff, against the 7, Mirra Andreeva. The young Russian celebrated her 18th birthday in Madrid on Tuesday and at her young age already has two WTA 1000s under her belt. Like Keys, Andreeva has yet to lose a set in the tournament and it is impossible to rule her out as one of the top contenders for the title given her phenomenal form. Last year she reached the Roland Garros semifinals and this year's tune-up for the second Grand Slam of the year is not bad at all.
On the other hand, his rival, Coco Gauff, has not had the best start of the year, alternating good and bad without being able to get into the fight for any title except for the United Cup at the beginning of the year together with Team USA.
In this clay court tour she has raised her level, reaching the quarterfinals in Stuttgart. She has just defeated Belinda Bencic in the round of 16 and if she wins in the Spanish capital, she would be one step away from displacing Swiatek and taking over the No. 2 ranking.
The numbers favor the North American, as she is 2-0 up in the record. But it will be the first time she will face this more mature and winning version of the Russian, reigning champion of the WTA 1000 Dubai and Indian Wells. Swiatek or Keys appear on the near horizon.

Aryna Sabalenka - Marta Kostyuk
A more than interesting duel will take place in the evening at the Manolo Santana, when the Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk faces the Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka. In the midst of the war conflict between Ukraine and Russia, there are some rough edges between the players of these countries;
For Kostyuk it is an unbeatable opportunity to prove what she is made for on Tour by defeating the best player in the world. In the tournament she has already beaten two Russians, Kudermetova in the third round and Potapova in the round of 16. After retiring from Stuttgart has managed to get into the top 8 in Spain and hopes to continue in shape to stand up to the No. 1.
It will not be an easy task, as Sabalenka has not lost many matches before the final of a tournament this year. The two-time Australian champion is coming off a loss in the Stuttgart final, but week by week she proves that she is a step above most.
The Belarusian knows what it's like to win in the Caja Mágica, lifting the trophy in 2021 and 2023. She has only dropped one set against Mertens and by ranking and level of play, she is the top favorite.
Kostyuk and Sabalenka have only met twice, with the Belarusian winning both times. The last time they met was on the clay of Roland Garros in 2023. In the semifinals, the winner will meet the winner of the match between Elina Svitolina and Moyuka Uchijima.

Elina Svitolina - Moyuka Uchijima
The experience of Ukraine's Elina Svitolina will be up against the youth of surprise package Moyuka Uchijima on the Arantxa Sanchez court. Both players are coming off impressive form, with the Japanese thwarting world No. 4 Jessica Pegula in the third round.
In Rouen she had also reached the quarterfinals, losing to Olga Danilovic of Serbia. It is clear that she likes to play on clay and that is where her best tennis can be seen.
Elina Svitolina was crowned champion in Rouen and a little more than a week later she is again playing in the quarterfinals. The Ukrainian has won 10 in a row, totally unstoppable. At 31, she is going through the best moment of her career.
Their only precedent is precisely on clay at the Paris Olympics, where Svitolina won comfortably.
