American tennis phenom Coco Gauff has had a poor first quarter of the season, compounded by an inconsistent serve. Former Grand Slam champion Rennae Stubbs is of the opinion that Gauff's serving woes may be here for the long run.

The World No.4 hit more double faults than any other WTA player in 2024, with the issue persisting into the 2025 season. Although Gauff replaced Brad Gilbert with new coach Matt Daly in September 2024, the serving difficulties remain as the Atlanta native has struggled with her serve over the last few months.

Bad technique could be the issue, says Stubbs

On the latest episode of her Rennae Stubbs podcast, the Australian addressed Gauff's serving woes, alongside retired German star Andrea Petkovic. The former World No.9 highlighted the number of double faults hit by Gauff during her Miami Open loss to Maga Linette.

"Coco Gauff, a disappointing month for her in Indian Wells, in Miami," began Petkovic. "Did you see her service motion live? I just saw it on video. She served, for those who haven't maybe followed, she served 12 double faults in her straight sets loss against Magda."

Stubbs, who previously coached WTA legend Serena Williams during her final run, believes Gauff's serving problems could be due to bad technique, quoting WTA icon Billie Jean King in her response.

"I just, her grip is wrong," said the 54-year old. "I think her elbow gets super low and sort of so close to her body. The left arm jumps down. There's so many little technical things that are going to be a problem for her going forward forever. Because it doesn't just go away. You know, Billie Jean King always said bad technique breaks down under pressure."
