Rogers ousts top seed Sakkari with dominant display in San Jose

Shelby Rogers picked up right where she left off on Thursday at the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic, stunning top seed Maria Sakkari to reach the quarterfinals.

The World No.45 had eased past former World No.3 Bianca Andreescu in the opening round, and kept her momentum going with a 6-1 6-3 over Sakkari. Rogers was firing off all cylinders, hitting 16 winners to just eight unforced errors in a sublime display of power and precision.

Additionally, Rogers was impressive on serve, hitting 10 aces in the 72 minute encounter. The American is yet to be broken during this tournament, and has saved all seven break points faced.

Playing her first hard-court match of the summer, Sakkari struggled to find her range throughout the match. While the top seed kept pace with Rogers in the winners department with 15, she also hit 27 unforced errors.

Having improved to 3-0 against Sakkari in career meetings, Rogers next faces compatriot Amanda Anisimova in the quarterfinals on Friday.
