The Stuttgart Open will head towards the Quarter-FInals on Thursday with a trio of Americans headlining the schedule on Day Four with Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff starting their campaign.
It is Mirra Andreeva though who begins the schedule on Thursday morning. She will face off against Ekaterina Alexandrova. Surprisingly they have never played during the rise of the 17-year-old so this is their first career meeting. It was a pretty simple but emotional task for the younger Andreeva on Wednesday.
Erika Andreeva was her first round opponent but the elder sister had to retire with a knee injury. This meant that Mirra got emotional post match about her older sister and is a match which evidenced by Wuhan last year is one she doesn't like playing.
So Alexandrova should be more of a gauge as to her current form. A Quarter-Final spot awaits. Then it is the turn of Jasmine Paolini who faces one of the remaining German players in Jule Niemeier.
Paolini thrashed another last round in Eva Lys so will have her sights set on a double home hero win. Then it is the form of Jessica Pegula who recently won Charleston and reached the final of Miami. So she is one of only a few players at the moment to seal a title on clay.
She snubbed the chance to play last week which mattered little in the end as Bernarda Pera and Hailey Baptiste anchored USA home at the Billie Jean King Cup. She has had a week off as a result that she said she wouldn't have so she will be refreshed. She has beaten Frech twice who had lost her last five before this week. She won in Madrid and Chicago in 2023 and 2021 with the former being a 7-6, 6-3.
Onto the second American of the equation as Coco Gauff faces Ella Seidel. The rising German came through a marathon clash with Tatjana Maria last night. Now she will have the true test against Gauff who while she hasn't been in the best form for a long time is still a quality operator and hasn't been seen since Miami.
So in reality could come out into Stuttgart with a vengeance. Then it is Emma Navarro who won her opener superbly against Beatriz Haddad Maia. She now takes on Jelena Ostapenko and could spoil a potential return clash of Swiatek v Ostapenko which is hotly anticipated due to the chokehold that the latter has over her.
Swiatek likely will be in two minds in that she will want to settle the score but also has a better record over Navarro so in reaching the semi-finals perhaps will hope it is the American.
