Emma Raducanu's poor play after the US Open triumph has some people worried but former tennis player and current analyst Alex Corretja is far from worried.
The Spaniard understands what Raducanu is going through and he like many warned tennis fans to be prepared for a period of tough breaks. Raducanu's never played a full season as a professional and getting used to the rigorous schedule of a professional tennis player is something new for her. For Corretja it's all about adjusting to a new life:
"She needs to adjust and adapt to a different life, she’s not a little girl from before – she’s a star. And if you are a star it’s a different situation, you need to deal
with absolutely, totally different moments and everybody expects a lot
from you."
Asked how will she do it, he said:
“I think she needs to go slowly, it’s difficult to ask her for more, I don’t think she needs to go out there feeling like she needs to win another Grand Slam soon because she’s good enough to continue with her way and she will find it.”
Unlike some fans, Corretja firmly belives Raducanu was not a one-hit wonder saying:
“For sure she will win more Grand Slams and she’s ready to do it but
I’m not so sure whether it’s going to be now or maybe she needs a little
bit of time to understand how everything works now the players know her
a little bit better. They know her weaknesses, they know her strengths. But I’m expecting a nice season from her because she’s brave, she’s determined, and I think she’s such a great player.”
