World No.1
Iga Swiatek put the rest of the field on notice at the 2022
WTA Finals, brushing past
Daria Kasatkina to secure her first win in the round robin stage.
Drawn in the Tracy Austin group alongside Kasatkina, Swiatek wasted little time in pulling off the 6-2 6-3 victory. The Polish star was dominant on serve, winning 82% of points behind her first serve. Furthermore, Swiatek saved all three break points faced. as she dictated play from the baseline with her precise groundstrokes.
Despite Kasatkina's best efforts, the Russian was unable to capitalize on what little chances were given to her by the US Open champion. After losing the first set, Kasatkina failed to take advantage of her lone break point opportunity, instead surrendering the crucial break to Swiatek who sealed her victory after an hour and 22 minutes.
The Tracy Austin Group also includes
Coco Gauff and
Caroline Garcia, both of whom face each other in the second round robin match of the day. Nonetheless, Swiatek is a heavy favorite to qualify from the group stage and advance to the semifinals.
