Iga Swiatek
talked about the importance of being world No. 1 for her after lose at US Open.
The Polish
player suffered a disappointing defeat in the fourth round of the US Open,
falling to Jelena Ostapenko, who holds a 4-0 advantage in their head-to-head
encounters, making her the player who has beaten Swiatek the most times.
The Latvian
had a strong performance, turning the match around to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 and
eliminating the defending champion at Flushing Meadows.
The loss
means that Swiatek will lose the world No. 1 ranking after the US Open, ending
a streak of 75 consecutive weeks as the leader in the rankings. Belarusian
Aryna Sabalenka will take her place regardless of the tournament's upcoming
results.

commented on the importance of reaching world No. 1 and emphasized that she
will work hard to continue improving her game.
“It meant a
lot. It was great. On the other hand, this last part was pretty exhausting. I
still need to do all this stuff that my team & all these great players like
Roger, Novak, & Rafa are telling me,” claimed Swiatek.
“You just
have to focus on the tournaments & not the rankings. Usually I’m not
looking at numbers, but overall, I love them. I’d love to extend this record a
bit longer. When I was younger, I wanted to break some record or have something,”
she said.
“I already
did that. I already won a Slam as the 1st Polish player. Being #1 is something great.
But when it happens, when you lose it. there are some sad emotions. All the
best players know it’s going to come back if you’re gonna work hard & focus
on the right things.”
“I feel
like I’m progressing as a player. This season was really tough & intense.
It’s not easy to cope with all this stuff. I’m just happy I’ll have time to
reset a little bit,” she concluded on her press conference after match.
