Questions continue for former Australian Open champion and World No.1, Caroline Wozniacki and whether she will return to the court again after spending the past few months on the sidelines.
Wozniacki last played in the Last 16 at the US Open losing out in three sets to Beatriz Haddad Maia but remained conspicuous for the rest of the season. This was perhaps no surprise given she returned at the previous US Open and then didn't play again until the Sunshine Double.
She opted to miss the Middle East and instead wanted to try and attempt to get wildcards with mixed success for tournaments in the US and then the clay court season when she snubbed Roland Garros Qualifying.
Her father Piotr caused controversy in the run up to the event by complaining about his daughter not getting a wildcard. But she did get them for the Olympic Games and Wimbledon. She reached the third round at the latter before being defeated by Danielle Collins in the Olympic Games.
She next played the US hard court swing where she played Cincinnati and the US Open in particular. She is currently sliding down the ranking and will further after not playing Charleston this week so will likely have to play qualifying with a protected ranking if she plays again.
Or she will have to go through wildcard gate again where she will attempt to do the same as her comeback. It was a shame for Wozniacki who had just started to gain some momentum in her quest to return to the top 50 and onwards.
She was only heard from when she decided not to play Australian Open saying rheumatoid arthiritis is behind it which prompted her decision to retire previously.
“My body was not feeling great. When I started pre-season training I was struggling with my body a little bit.
“I have rheumatoid arthritis so it’s been an ongoing battle but I am hoping with a little break I will be back again soon.”
Presumably given her lack of play on clay last year and likely less of a chance of getting wildcards, she will likely only return during grass and up until the US Open. Or she may fade away into retirement again.
She hasn't shown any glimpses of training which even Venus Williams has in recent months despite showing no desire to return to the sport anytime soon. She has been on a skiing holiday with her family instead with her daughter wanting to be the new Lindsay Vonn.
But Wozniacki herself has had an incredible career and will likely want to go out on her own terms with one more run under her belt. Albeit as has been the issue with her comeback is that it has been stop start and any momentum has been curtailed. That has happened again albeit with no sign she will be back anytime soon.
Great family vacation in Aspen! Highlight was skiing with Olivia, she is striving to be the next @lindseyvonn , only wanting to go faster and straight down the mountain 😂 pic.twitter.com/py8ABvMqpi
