Former world number one Martina Navratilova has backed America’s
Coco Gauff to win Wimbledon in 2024. The 19-year-old is often termed as one of
the most highly-rated young player in the women’s singles category currently
playing in the circuit.
Gauff recently won her maiden Grand Slam title while playing
in her home country as she defeated the world number two Belarus’ Aryna
Sabalenka in the final with a score of 2–6, 6–3, 6–2 to lift the US Open title.
Navratilova, who ended up winning 18 Grand Slam titles in
her career, was recently quoted in a report where she backed the young American
tennis star to win another major title in 2024 and she picked Wimbledon as an
ideal event for the Atlanta-born.
“I would be surprised if she doesn’t win another major this
year,” she said. “And Wimbledon makes the most sense. I think it’s on grass
because she’s better at the net than any of them and moves forward so well.
“That and her improved drop shot. I think you’ll see that
across the board next year, the [Carlos] Alcaraz influence on the sport. For
me, Coco should be the favorite on grass. Particularly since by her own
admission, it’s Iga’s most challenging surface.”
