WTA Rankings Update: Aryna Sabalenka becomes World No.1 in bizarre circumstance as Iga Swiatek's reign ends

The WTA Rankings have been updated after another week of action and bizarrely Aryna Sabalenka is now World No.1 again after both her and Iga Swiatek were given a ranking point fine.

Neither player was in action over the past week which resulted in a penalty for both of them. Players are mandated to play `at least six WTA 500 tournaments a year with Swiatek only playing two and Sabalenka entering four. This means they are given respective fines. Albeit Sabalenka's was only marginal meaning that she becomes World No.1 without playing.

Neither player have signed up for Tokyo so will incur another ranking penalty. The week after that sees the WTA Finals with this taken off their totals and will see Sabalenka gain a big lead compared to currently. Swiatek will need to defend her title without losing a match to end her season as World No.1 and will need Sabalenka to lose in the group stage. If Sabalenka wins at least two of her group matches, she completes it no matter what.

Elsewhere, Daria Kasatkina is back into the top 10 after winning Ningbo. Mirra Andreeva despite her tears continues to rise. She is up to World No.16. Further down Karolina Muchova continues to rise too up five to World No.25.
