Andy Murray pulled out of the Roland Garros after experiencing some discomfort while playing doubles in Rome.
The news about Andy Murray's withdrawal from the Roland Garros disappointed many tennis fans who were wanting to see him face off against some of the best in the world. The decision for Murray came after experiencing some discomfort while playing doubles tennis in Rome. Former coach Alex Corretja believes it was a wise decision:
“I think skipping Roland Garros this year is a good idea because he knows he is not going to do great and he can only go and hurt himself in a long match. If he wants to beat Davidovich Fokina or Andujar, he knows he needs four and a half hours. What’s the point in doing that? Just save some energy and be ready for grass.”
Murray last played at the French Open in 2020 where he lost in the first round against Stan Wawrinka. It was somewhat of a humbling defeat for Muray as well as he lost 6-1 6-3 6-2. After that Murray decided to take part in some Challenger events as well which is something Corretja also spoke about:
“The difference with Roger is that Andy has been playing in the last months, not very successful but he has been playing in Challengers and been humble enough to go back in order to get some rhythm."
In the end, Corretja also noted that Andy should play on clay because the clay season is very long and it could prove beneficial in the long run:
“I am not saying he should skip clay because he can still do well on clay but I would say play the least on clay because his best results are not going to be on clay. But it’s key the clay-court season, it's two and a half months so it’s such a long period but maybe he could play a couple of events to be ready for the grass which in the end should be his goal."
