Spanish tennis star Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is known for the occasional outburst while on court, but has realized he needs to work on his volatile attitude if he wants to improve as a player.
The 25-year old is a surprise semifinalist at the ongoing Monte-Carlo Masters, where he defeated 11th seed Ben Shelton and fifth-seeded Jack Draper en route to the final four. Davidovich Fokina will battle compatriot Carlos Alcaraz for a spot in the final, with the former World No.1 winning their sole encounter when they faced off in Barcelona in 2023.
The Spaniard was calm and stoic in his quarterfinal win over Australian Alexei Popyrin, which was a sharp contrast to his fiery disposition during his round of 16 victory over Draper. The difference seems to have been reflected in the scoreline, with Davidovich Fokina breezing past Popyrin in straight sets, whereas he struggled to defeat Draper in three close sets.
"What happened in the Draper match, I am aware that it cannot be repeated," admitted Davidovich Fokina after his win over Popyrin. "I spoke a lot with my team afterward and realized that I don't want to continue with that attitude throughout my sports career. I need to stop complaining and be much more professional to not show my emotions as much. Today, I was able to be much more focused, as well as to stay calm and have a good attitude on the court."
The World No.42 already has 18 match wins to his name this season, which is the same as he achieved throughout all of last year. When asked about the reason for this evident improvement, Davidovich Fokina credited his improved maturity.
"Winning matches is crucial because it gives you the necessary confidence to face this type of match," said the Spaniard. "Last year was tough for me, but it made me much more mature and improved as a person. When you feel that off the court, it is much more likely to have a good sports performance."
See you in the semis! 👋
