Andy Roddick had US Open Tournament Director Stacey Allaster on Served this past week announcing the change which sees Mixed Doubles moved to Fan Week. It features a lesser format and wildcards but could Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal among others come out of retirement for it?

Roddick speculated they could with the size of the field halved from 32 to 16 teams. During the first three rounds, teams will need to win up to four games to win a set while the final will be played with regular sets.

Roddick was delighted with the changes which also cuts the amount of teams and adds wildcards in play making it more like legends doubles than mixed doubles and he speculated that it could lead to some of those legendary names getting involved due to the lesser format.

“I will tell you this, I want to put this out into the universe right now. There are some recently retired players… I don’t know about a little Roger and Serena action,” he teased.

“I don’t know what Rafa is doing right now. I am just saying, let’s throw a bomb of enthusiasm into this thing! This is just me wishing I don’t know.”

Albeit it isn't all sunshine and roses with established doubles stars including Jan Zielenski, Ellen Perez and Edouard Roger-Vasselin airing their grievance with the change and slamming it.

“No communication with the players, no thought behind what it means to some peoples careers, no respect to the history and traditions,” Zielinski said in response to the announcement. “Sad to see.”

“Terrible decision not to let the doubles Players play the mixed doubles at the @usopen (thumbs down emoji),” the Frenchman said on X (formerly known as Twitter).

“Tell us that you think doubles players are trash, that tradition is overrated and job opportunity is a thing of the past without actually saying it. (clown and clapping emoji)” Perez added on social media.
