Coming out of the Indian Wells tournament, Jack Draper and Holger Rune were the big winners to rise in the ATP Race to Turin, both in qualifying positions for the ATP Finals. They were not the only ones, as Daniiil Medvedev managed to rebound from a difficult start to 2025.
Those who missed their chance were Alexander Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz, who had a chance to take the lead in Indian Wells, but their early defeats helped Jannik Sinner, who remains on top after missing the first Masters 1000 of his three-month suspension.
It is remarkable that after nearly 6 weeks of suspension, Jannik Sinner is still leading the ATP Race - and still by a good margin - with only one tournament played. The Italian only appeared at the Australian Open, winning the title and 2,000 points. Recall that the Race only takes into account points earned in the calendar year - from the first week of 2025 - unlike the rankings which take into account the last 52 weeks of each player's career.
There were a few players with a chance of overtaking Sinner. In particular Zverev (No. 2) could overtake Sinner should he reach the final, a mission that did not seem impossible for the first seed. Likewise, Alcaraz and Felix Auger-Aliassime could overtake the 3-time Grand Slam champion should they win the title. In the case of the Spaniard, he seemed favourite from the start, considering he was 2-time defending champion and second seed.
The man of the week was undoubtedly Jack Draper, who won his first Masters 1000 title, beating off the likes of Ben Shelton (11th), Taylor Fritz (3rd) and Carlos Alcaraz (2nd), as well as Holger Rune in a stunning finish (12th).
It was 1,000 points in his pocket and he took third place in the Race, displacing Alcaraz to 4th and Auger-Aliassime to 5th place. He is only 35 points behind Zverev, meaning that he can leave ‘Sascha’ behind if he advances at least one round further than him. In addition, if he reaches the final in Miami, he will leave the current leader Sinner behind.
On the other hand, Holger Rune took 8th place, the last qualifying spot for the Finals at the end of the season. The Dane took a painful defeat in the final, but he can take a positive account in terms of the 650-point gain. Just a week ago he was not even in the top-3.
Daniil Medvedev was another to start making amends as he reached the semifinals at the Indian Wells and climbs to No. 12. Important achievement for the Russian as he looks to start clay-swing in a couple of weeks and points on hardcourts will be important, especially considering he has struggled on clay all his career.
Novak Djokovic is the big newcomer to drop down the rankings. He stayed in the top-10 thanks to his Australian Open semi-final campaign, but an early loss at Tennis Paradise to Botic van de Zandshuclp saw him drop just 10 points and fall from 7th place to 9th place. With the gap in the rankings narrowing, Djokovic will need a good result at the Miami Open if he hopes to stay inside the top-10.
Denis Shapovalov and Tomas Machac were among the victims of earlier exits than expected, dropping out of the top-10 of the Race. Alejandor Davidovich Fokina, Stefano Tsitispas, Sebastian Baez and Andrey Rublev were among the names who looked set for a top-10 finish, but also suffered disappointments that dropped them down a few places.
