As Indian Wells ends, Mirra Andreeva moves up a few places and enters the WTA Race podium, while Madison Keys remains firmly at the top. 3-time Grand Slam champion Aryna Sabalenka remains in second place heading into the WTA Finals after reaching the final at the Tennis Garden, although Mirra Andreeva is close behind.
The WTA Race considers only points earned during the calendar year, i.e. since the start of the season in the first week of 2025, unlike the WTA Ranking which takes the last 52 weeks of the ATP stars. Without much movement in the top 10, Belinda Bencic takes her place in the top-10 after a good run to the quarter-finals of the tournament.
Australian Open champion Madison Keys remains at the top on 2,954 points, despite ending her run of 15 consecutive wins in the semi-finals at Indian Wells. The loss to Aryna Sabalenka - who reached 2,590 points - allowed the Belarusian to close the gap in the Race after reaching the final, although even winning the title would not have been enough to overtake her.
However, the world No. 1 remains second in the Race, albeit just a few points behind teenager sensation Mirra Andreeva. After winning her second consecutive WTA 1000 title she reached 2,510 points and moved up again one position in the Race, entering the podium as third place and leaving 5-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek (2,110) a little further behind.
The four leading players have been undoubtedly the best of the season so far, in fact they were the four who appeared in the semi-finals at Indian Wells (defeats for Swiatek and Keys). With this the gap is wide with Elena Rybakina (5th. 1,320) and Clara Tauson (6th, 1310). Even winning the title in these weeks at the Miami Open would not catch any of the players on the podium, and they could barely overtake Swiatek.
After Tauson there are three Americans in the rankings, although curiously without the presence of world No. 3 Coco Gauff (just 12th in the Race), 23-year-old Emma Navarro is the second American in the rankings, who despite a third-round defeat at Indian Wells, picked up a good amount of points with her first WTA 500 at the Merida Open a couple of weeks later.
Jessica Pegula (8th, 1,170) and the Dubai Open champion Amanda Anismova (9th, 1,155) retain their positions from a week ago. That's 4 Americans in the top-10 (5 in the top-12 considering Gauff).
New to the WTA Race top-10 is Belinda Bencic, who won a WTA 500 in Abu Dhabi Open and reached the quarter-finals in Indian Wells. Despite her recent return to the WTA Tour, she has been one of the best of the season. In fact, she is the only player in the top-15 of the RAce who did not get a seed in the Miami Open, although she seems to be getting closer and closer. A similar result to this weeks could bring her back into the top-32 and she can look forward to seeded appearances at major tournaments, a position she deserves with her incredible 2025 start.
Other quarter-finalists who moved up in the rankings include Lidumila Samsonova and Elina Svitolina, both of whom scored an important 200 points to move up in the Race. The Ukrainian in particular is already in the top-15.
Partial losers were Paula Badosa (11th, 1,145 points) and the above-mentioned Gauff (12th, 1,080 points). The Spaniard was prevented from playing in the Tennis Garden due to a relapse of her back injury, while Gauff (third seed) barely reached the Round of 16, falling to the impressive Belinda Bencic.
