The ATP 500 Barcelona Open didn’t produce any major surprises on Wednesday, as the first Round of 16 matches took place, featuring Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas as the main attractions.
The defending champion and the four-time Barcelona finalist both faced tough opponents, but neither had any trouble advancing to the quarter-finals.

Red-Hot Fils dismantles Martinez in straight sets

Arthur Fils def. Pedro Martinez: 6-3, 6-2
The Frenchman remains in top form over recent months and looks poised to make a serious impact this clay swing. He reached the quarter-finals at the last three Masters 1000 events, winning 11 of his last 14 matches. In Monte-Carlo, he showed how quickly he can adapt to slower surfaces and nearly pulled off a surprise against Carlos Alcaraz, though the Spaniard eventually turned the match around and went on to lift the trophy days later.
In Barcelona, Fils has defeated two home players: Pablo Carreño Busta (7-6, 6-3) and now a commanding win over Pedro Martinez (6-3, 6-2). The Frenchman was nearly untouchable on serve, winning 75% of service points, and also posted solid numbers on return with 42%. He was much more dominant from the baseline, hitting 27 winners to Martinez’s 6. However, unforced errors remain an issue for Fils, with 24 compared to Martinez’s 19. Still, it was more than enough to advance to the quarter-finals without much trouble, converting 3 of 5 break points and saving the only one he faced.

Rune rallies past Baez in gruelling clay battle

Rune def. Baez: 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
It wasn’t an easy task for Holger Rune, who changed his usual schedule this year—opting to play Barcelona instead of the Munich Open—and so far, the decision is paying off. He faced Sebastián Báez, one of the most consistent clay-courters on Tour, with six titles and two more finals on the surface. This year alone, Báez has won the ATP 500 Rio Open and reached the finals in Santiago and Bucharest.
Coming into the match, their head-to-head stood at 2-2 (with Báez leading 2-1 on clay), but Rune showed his class after dropping the opening set. It was a match defined by unforced errors, with the two combining for 71 against just 43 winners, both with very slight margins. In the second and third sets, Rune was especially effective on return, punishing both first and second serves from Báez, and closed out a tricky win: 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Tsitsipas downs Korda to stay on course

Tsitispas def. Korda: 7-6(4), 6-4
Stefanos Tsitsipas faced a tough draw in Sebastian Korda, always a tricky opponent. The Greek has reached the Barcelona final four times but is still chasing his first title there—most recently falling to Casper Ruud in the 2024 final.
This time, he didn’t face much trouble against Korda, a talented rival who has never quite found his rhythm on clay. Tsitsipas secured a straightforward 7-6(4), 6-4 win, although his 30 unforced errors could be a concern heading into the next round if he wants to avoid an upset.
The former World No. 3 is preparing for a ranking drop, as even a title run won’t keep him inside the Top 15. Still, Barcelona remains one of his most successful tournaments, and as the third seed behind World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz, he remains one to watch.

Ruud rallies twice to beat Medjedovic

Ruud def. Medjedovic: 7-5, 7-5.
The defending champion arrived in Barcelona with some doubts after being upset by Alexei Popyrin in the Round of 16 at the Monte-Carlo Masters. However, he looked much more comfortable in Barcelona, recently defeating Hamad Medjedovic by stepping up in the key moments to secure a 7-5, 7-5 win.
In the first set, Ruud was down 2-4, 15-40, but overcame the tough situation by winning five of the next six games to take a tight opener. The second set followed a similar pattern—Medjedovic earned an early break and led 3-1, but couldn’t maintain the lead as Ruud once again came from behind to seal the victory. The win sets up a blockbuster quarter-final clash with Holger Rune.
