Carlos Alcaraz addressed the topic of mental health in tennis after his fellow Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo announced a break from the sport to take care of her “mind” and “body.” The Spanish player revealed on social media the emotional struggles she has faced in recent months.
“I’ve lost the excitement to train, to improve, and even to go to tournaments. The moments of suffering far outweigh those of calm, and this is coming from someone who has always loved to work, improve, and compete,” wrote the former World No. 32 on Instagram.
In one of the major headlines of the day, mental health in tennis once again takes centre stage. Previously, players such as Naomi Osaka, Elina Svitolina, and Amanda Anisimova have also taken breaks from the tour due to mental health challenges and the relentless demands of professional tennis.
While competing at the Barcelona Open, Carlos Alcaraz was asked about Sorribes Tormo’s decision and shared his thoughts on the pressures of high-level competition and the constant criticism and messages received on social media.
“We pay attention to social media, and unfortunately, we give more weight to the negative than to the positive,” he said. “Tennis is very demanding, with tournaments week after week, and it requires a very high mental level. Sometimes you realise you need to stop. I haven’t reached the point where I need to take several months off, for me just a few days have been helpful, but you have to listen to what your body and mind need.”
He also opened up about his recent experience: “In Miami, I needed to stop for a week to realise what was important to me. That helped me to begin the clay swing the way I have. I feel sad hearing Sara say she needs to take a break, but I hope she finds the answers she’s looking for soon. She’s a warrior.”
The 4-time Grand Slam champion has so far had a strong showing at the Barcelona Open, securing his second win of the tournament against Laslo Djere. He will face Alex de Minaur in the quarterfinals this Friday.
