Carlos Alcaraz continues to solidify his reputation as a near-invincible force on Spanish clay. Since 2022, the young Spaniard has suffered just one defeat on home soil—against Andrey Rublev at last year’s Madrid Open. It's worth noting that Rublev went on to win the title, and Alcaraz came into that match carrying physical discomfort.
This year, after missing the
Barcelona Open in 2023, Alcaraz returned to action with renewed vigor and undefeated on clay, having claimed the Monte Carlo Masters just days prior. His biggest test so far came in the quarterfinals, where he faced a stern challenge from Australia's Alex de Minaur. But the world No. 2 rose to the occasion, gradually finding his rhythm and closing out the match in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3.
Alcaraz Edges Tight Opening Set
De Minaur started strong and looked to be the aggressor for much of the first set, holding a break advantage and pushing Alcaraz onto the back foot. However, the Spaniard rallied to level the match at 4-4, then broke serve to move ahead 6-5. Just when a tiebreak seemed inevitable, Alcaraz elevated his level, capitalizing on unforced errors from the Australian to clinch the set 7-5.
Dominance in the Second Set
The second set was a masterclass from Alcaraz. Playing some of his best tennis of the week, he dictated rallies and took control of the baseline exchanges. He broke De Minaur at a crucial moment and held serve with confidence, sealing the set 6-3 and booking his place in the semifinals.
Awaiting him will be the winner of the clash between last year’s finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas and rising French talent Arthur Fils, who is enjoying a hot streak with his fourth consecutive quarterfinal appearance on tour. Alcaraz, meanwhile, remains on course for his third title at the prestigious Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell.
