Dazzling Draper seals US Open debut win, Wawrinka retires after two sets against Moutet

Away from the glare of Arthur Ashe Stadium, Jack Draper was playing in his US Open debut and saw off Emil Ruusuvuori in a 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 victory for the Brit who continues to rise in a stellar stand-out year.

Rising inside the World's top 50 provisionally, he vanquished the Finn who defeated him at Queen's earlier this season with relative ease as he continues his form from Winston-Salem last week where he lost in the Quarter-Final to Marc-Andrea Huesler.

As well as his run in Canada losing to eventual champion, Pablo Carreno-Busta. It is only his second overall Grand Slam singles win with Wimbledon seeing him defeat Zizou Bergs earlier this season and next in his sights will be Felix Auger-Aliassime.

But one player who won't make it to the second round is Stan Wawrinka as the Swiss former US Open champion retired against Corentin Moutet after two sets.

Wawrinka retired at the end of the second-set tiebreak allowing the Frenchman to take a 6-4, 7-6(7) ret win. After looking poor in the opening set, he roared back to life in the second and gave the packed crowd on Court Five hope.

But this was diminished as both held serve until the tie-break where Wawrinka squandered set points and Moutet took it 9-7. It is unclear what was bothering Wawrinka injury wise with issues with his finger as well as his leg but he sees the positives despite retiring early on.

“I see that I'm playing and feeling better. Even if I'm not winning yet, I know I will be back winning matches soon. That's for sure,” he said. “I will never be able to play as well as I did [before] in my career, because I'm getting older, but I believe that I still have some good and big results in me, and that's why I’m gonna keep fighting a little bit."
