Former world number one
Jimmy Connors has heaped praise on
Italy’s
Jannik Sinner after his incredible performances. The 23-year-old is
regarded as the best player currently playing in men’s tennis in the singles
category.
Sinner recently secured his third Grand Slam title. He
defended his crown in Melbourne after beating Germany’s Alexander Zverev in the
final in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 7-6, 6-3. It was his third major
title on the hard court. He lifted the
Australian Open in 2024 after beating
Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the final in a five-set thriller with a score of
3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 7-6. He then won the US Open last year as well after
beating America’s Taylor Fritz in the final with a score of 6-3, 6-4, 7-5.
In between that, he also won the ATP Finals on his home
soil, where he got the better of Fritz as well in straight sets with a score of
6-4, 6-4. Former world number one Connors has been recently quoted in a report where
he praised the reigning world number one. Connors was full of praise for Sinner, who, according to him, has put his reputation online, something which he admires about the player.
“Going for the past year and a half or maybe even a little
longer now, he has been on a roll,” he said. “He has been on a tear up. His
last 18 months or so has been pretty incredible and to keep playing at that
high a level, match in, match out, tournament in, tournament out. To put your
reputation on the line. I love that. That was what drove me during my time, it
was to go out and reach what I expected of myself every time I expected with
myself every time I stepped on the court. And boy he has been playing
incredible.”
