Former American players
John Isner and
Sam Querrey believe
that Germany’s
Alexander Zverev’s best chance of winning a Grand Slam is at the
French Open. The 27-year-old is regarded as one of the most high-profile players
currently playing in men’s tennis in the singles category.
However, that has not transformed into major titles. Zverev had
a rough day in the grand finale of the first Grand Slam of 2025 on Sunday in
Melbourne, where he came second best against the reigning world number one Italy’s
Jannik Sinner in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 7-6, 6-3.
It was the third time Zverev ended on the losing side in the
final of a major competition. In 2020, he finished as the runner-up at the US
Open after losing to Dominic Thiem in a five-set thriller with a score of 2–6,
4–6, 6–4, 6–3, 7–6. Four years later, in 2024, the reigning world number two once
again lost in the final of a Grand Slam, this time to Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz,
who lifted the French Open after winning an epic five-set encounter with a
score of 6–3, 2–6, 5–7, 6–1, 6–2. Former American players Isner and Querry have been recently quoted
in a report where they both agreed that Zverev’s best chance to win a Grand
Slam will be at the Roland Garros.
“I think it’s the French,” said Isner. “I think so too,” said
Querry in response. “His ball striking. He is a big guy. He has long levers. He
can hit the ball through the clay. He has been to the finals of the French
Open, I think that is his best opportunity, especially if the draw sets up
right for him. He will most likely be a top four seed, depending on what half
he gets in, if he can avoid Sinner or Alcaraz based on the seeding, if one of
those guys get knocked out… I put the French Open as the Slam which he has the
best chance to win.”
