Italy’s Jannik Sinner’s trainer, Riccardo Piatti, has named three possible candidates to become the coach of the reigning world number one. The 23-year-old, who is regarded as one of the best players currently playing in men’s tennis in the singles category along with the likes of Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, is set to be without a coach as his current coach Darren Cahill is set to step down from his role at the end of the year.

Sinner’s trainer Piatti was recently quoted in a report by The Tennis Gazette, in which he named three possible candidates, including former world number one Carlos Moya, as the ideal candidate to replace Cahill in the near future.

“I’d like to see Carlos Moya in that position,” he said. “He was the world number one, he knows the Tour very well. He’s a very good person, just like Darren. Another good candidate is Renzo Furlan, who just finished working with Jasmine Paolini. Ljubicic is also good, as is Becker. However, Boris can be difficult.”

Moya, who won the 1998 French Open title after beating fellow countryman Alex Corretja with a score of 6-3, 7-5, 6-3, has had an outstanding record while working as a coach. He worked for a long time with the former world number one, Spain’s Rafael Nadal. Under his coaching, the 38-year-old, who is regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of men’s tennis in the singles category in the Open era, lifted as many as eight major titles.

It was under his coaching that Nadal became the first player in the history of men’s tennis in the singles category to win more than 20 Grand Slam titles in his career. He achieved that in 2022 after beating Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the final of the Australian Open in a five-set thriller with a score of 2–6, 6–7(5–7), 6–4, 6–4, 7–5.
