Fans
reacted to another injury suffered by
Matteo Berrettini during his match with
Arthur Rinderknech in the second round of the
US Open.
The Italian
has had a tough time in 2023, battling injuries that have kept him from
achieving the kind of results he had in previous years, which saw him reach the
final of the 2021 Wimbledon and climb to world No. 6.
After the
conclusion of the US Open, Berrettini will occupy the world No. 65 ranking at
best, though he could drop even further depending on the results of the coming
weeks.
This time,
Berrettini's injury was particularly complex as he was trying to stage a
comeback in his match against Rinderknech (6-4, 5-3 in favor of the Frenchman).
During an
exchange, the Italian moved towards his backhand side and attempted to slide,
but his right foot got stuck, resulting in a shocking ankle twist that elicited
screams of pain and tears, forcing him to retire.
Berrettini
had already been absent from the ATP tour for about six weeks due to an injury
following the Australian Open. Then, in Monte-Carlo, he withdrew prior to his
round of 16 match against Holger Rune, missing the rest of the clay court
tournaments, including the French Open, and returned during the grass court
season.
Although he
exited in the first round of Stuttgart and then skipped Queen's Club, he
arrived at Wimbledon showing determination in his favorite tournament. He won
matches against the 15th seed Alex de Minaur and the 19th seed Alexander Zverev
before falling to the eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz in four sets.
Fans
reacted to the bad luck that has plagued Berrettini over the past year due to
the injuries that have affected him:
"Jesus,
this man can't get a break. It really feels cruel at this point, it's like
universe is saying 'no' to his career. Feel sorry for the Matteo, I really do.
Hope he can recover from this one quickly," another fan commented.
“Matteo
Berrettini once won 18 straight grand slam matches without losing to anyone not
named Djokovic or Nadal. The sport is better when this guy is healthy. Very sad
to see.”
