Australia’s
Nick Kyrgios has named his favourite and least
favourite Grand Slam. The 29-year-old is regarded as one of the most outspoken
players currently playing tennis. Because of this, Kyrgios has also been involved in some controversies.
The Canberra-born, who is now edging closer to return to
action after spending nearly two years on the sidelines because of fitness
concerns and has already announced that he will take part in the 2025 edition
of the
Australian Open, has recently spoken in the Nothing Majors podcast as
quoted by The Tennis Gazette where he named his favourite and least favourite
Grand Slam.
“I am sorry but
Wimbledon as an event is not even that
good,” said Kyrgios. “I don’t really like the set-up and the cafe. [The] Aussie
Open is unreal.
US Open is my favourite. I love the venue, the food court is
insane, I love that. Wimbledon is insane, I just don’t like the – I don’t know
– I just prefer the US Open. It’s so simple, locker room, go upstairs, food. Wimbledon,
just not a fan of it man.”
Those words are interesting because Wimbledon is the only Grand
Slam where Kyrgios has managed to play beyond the quarterfinals stage. The former
world number 13 played in the final at Wimbledon two years back, where he lost
to Serbia’s Novak Djokovic with a score of 4–6, 6–3, 6–4, 7–6(7–3). Kyrgios’
most impressive record while playing at the US Open came in 2022, and he played in the quarterfinal. However, he ended on the losing side against
Russia’s Karen Khachanov with a score of 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, 6-7, 6-4. It was, unfortunately, the last mega-event in which Kyrgios participated just before suffering from a serious injury that kept him out of action for more than 24 months.
