America’s
Danielle Collins has shared an interesting
perspective about handshakes in tennis. In the recent past, there has been some
discussion about whether it feels fake to have players having handshakes at the
end of the match so soon after competing against the same opponent to secure a
positive result.
Collins, while talking to the media ahead of the first Grand
Slam of the year — the Australian Open — was asked about what her point of view
is regarding hand shakes in tennis. In response to that, the 31-year-old
explained that she and the majority of the players have no problem having a
handshake with the opponent.
Collins further went on to explain why she has different expressions at the end of the matches where, at times, she looks extremely upset, whereas, on other occasions, it seemed like she was making fun of herself. The Florida-born star also stated that fans are deluded into believing that they know everything about the players’ personalities, but in reality, that is not the case.
“I think we all compete hard against each other and we give
it our all but I think for the most part, I think most of us are pretty cool
about shaking hand with each other at the end of the day,” she said. “I’m a
human. I have situations I like and situations I don’t like. Things happen,
right? All these memes keep coming up on my Instagram, you know my face says it
all. I am just somebody that is pretty genuine about what I am thinking and feeling
and I also laugh at myself because I know I can be this way. I know its not
always the greatest but I try to poke fun at myself and not take myself too
seriously. I honestly encourage other people to do the same because at the end
of the day, we can laugh at ourselves about things, take things light
heartedly, what the heck are we doing. I feel like so much taken out of context.
Fans think they know players personally. They think they know all the ins and
outs and what takes place on a daily basis, but the reality is this that they
really don’t and yea, I just think at the end of the day, I am just trying to make
fun of myself.”
