After going 0-11 in career meetings against Top 5 opponents, Frances Tiafoe finally claimed his first scalp as he stunned World No.4 Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
Tiafoe pulled off a splendid performance, outplaying the third seed to record a 6-4 6-4 6-3 victory. The World No.56 played with confidence that belied his low ranking, frustrating his Greek opponent with breathtaking shots from the baseline and precision at the net.
“This is definitely one of my best performances," admitted Tiafoe. "From start to finish it was pretty clean. If you want to play against the best in the world, in the best atmosphere in the world, this is what you train for and what it’s all about."
Having won a challenger event in Nottingham earlier this month and reached the quarterfinals at Queens, Tiafoe seemed more comfortable on grass than Tsitsipas, whose last match on the surface came two years ago at Wimbledon.
“I’m not even close to where I want to be as a player," revealed the American. "I’ve had a lot of great achievements but I haven’t even scratched the surface. I’m very capable – obviously today showed it. Today was big. A guy of his level, he’s going to do a lot of great things, win a ton of Grand Slams… but not today.”
