In a clash between former Grand Slam champions, Sloane Stephens reigned supreme as she eliminated two-time champion Petra Kvitová in the first round of the Wimbledon Championships.
Stephens, the 2017 US Open champion, seemed the more calm and collected of the two as she ousted her the 10th seed 6-3 6-4 in just 77 minutes.
“Obviously, seeing the first round, I was like, ‘Oh boy, this is going to be a difficult task’. But knowing that I’ll probably play on a big court and feeling good, I was excited to play against Petra,” Stephens said after her victory.
Ranked at World No.73, the American hadn't competed on grass in two years and had accumulated a pedestrian 21-11 record this season. However, she was the more determined player during the first round encounter, dictating play with her huge forehand.
“I love grass, and it’s just not really translated," revealed the 28-year old. "It’s been a couple of years since I’ve had a good result on grass but here is a good start, beating a really good grass-court player. So I'm looking forward to more matches and hopefully can get a good run here at Wimbledon.”
