Spain’s
Carlos Alcaraz has confirmed that he will play the
Queen’s ATP Championship in 2025. The mega-event, which is one of the oldest in
the history of tennis, is being organised just a few days before the start of
the second Grand Slam of the year.
Alcaraz, who is already regarded as one of the best players
currently playing in men’s tennis in the singles category along with Italy’s
Jannik Sinner and Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, has confirmed that he will participate
in next year’s event. The 21-year-old, in a statement that BBC Sports quoted,
stated that winning the competition two years back helped him have a belief
that he could lift the Wimbledon title as well.
"Lifting the title two years ago is what gave me the
belief to go on and win Wimbledon for the first time, so it always means a lot
to compete there,” said Alcaraz."I love playing in front of the fans in
London and I hope I can have another successful summer in the UK."
Alcaraz lifted the title in the 2023 edition as he defeated
Australia’s Alex de Minaur in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-4,
6-4. This year, it was world number four America’s Taylor Fritz who lifted the
title after beating Lorenzo Musetti in the final in straight sets with a score
of 6-1, 7-6. The competition will be organised from 16-22 June. The tournament
will feature the women's category for the first time in 50 years.
Alcaraz has a fabulous record playing on the grass court. He
has already lifted the Wimbledon title two times. In 2023, he defeated Djokovic
in the final in a five-set thriller with a score of 1–6, 7–6(8–6), 6–1, 3–6,
6–4. Twelve months later, Alcaraz once again lifted the title after beating Djokovic
again in the final, this time in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-2, 7-6.
