French tennis player
Ugo Humbert believes hiring former
world number one
Andy Murray as a coach will help Serbia’s
Novak Djokovic get
the better of the likes of Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and Italy’s Jannik Sinner.
The 37-year-old is regarded as the greatest player in the
history of men’s tennis in the singles category in the Open era, having won as
many as 24 Grand Slam titles. Djokovic has struggled in recent years, as it was the first time in seven years that he finished a season without winning a
single Grand Slam. That led the Glasgow-born star to hire former world number
one Murray as his new coach for the upcoming 2025 season.
The Glasgow-born star, who won three Grand Slams in his
illustrious career, retired after taking part recently in the Paris Olympics,
largely because of fitness concerns. French tennis player Humber has recently spoken to Tennis Majors, as quoted by Tennis 365, where he spoke about the importance of Murray joining the coaching staff of Djokovic. The 26-year-old believes that having someone like the former world number one in the dugout will help Djokovic get better than the likes of the reigning world number one Sinner and world number three Alcaraz.
“Djokovic appointed Murray because, quite simply, he still
wants to win big titles,” he said. “Murray has bothered him a lot during his
career, so maybe Murray will give him some keys to exploit to try to beat
Sinner and Alcaraz, who are currently the two best in the Grand Slam
tournaments. He is looking for something more in Murray to try to win big
titles again, because he feels capable of it. Djoko, you should never bury him.
I think he knows very well what he is doing. You have to be vigilant. I am very
happy with this relationship and it will also be nice for tennis to see Murray
in Djoko’s box.”
