Jack Draper is through to his maiden ATP 1000 quarterfinal due to Gael Monfils rolling his ankle and retiring from the match being down 2-6 2-0.
It was a very interesting match between Gael Monfils and Jack Draper with the Brit jumping out to an early lead and holding it for a 6-2 opening set win. Monfils jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the 2nd set but rolled his ankle in the 3rd game being unable to continue. It's a terrible development for Monfils who had a foot problem that kept him out of action for months.
A reserved Draper wished him all the best because he has dealt with some injuries himself:
"I know what it's like to do an ankle. I did one last year and rebounded. I hope Gael is alright. I wish him all the best for the rest of the season. I guess to be in the quarter-finals is nice for myself, but it's never how you want it to happen."
Touching upon his breakthrough this week, Draper stayed humble explaining that sometimes you just have one of those weeks:
"On Tour, sometimes it's your week. If you train hard every day and keep your head down, I suppose these things happen. I'm very happy to be in the quarter-finals here. It means a lot."
