Matteo
Berrettini claimed the Comeback Player of the Year award after a remarkable
season following six months of inactivity. The Italian won three titles this
year, a tally only surpassed by
Jannik Sinner and
Carlos Alcaraz, and climbed
over 100 spots in the rankings.
The 2021
Wimbledon runner-up spent much of 2023 sidelined due to injuries and found
himself outside the top 150 by March. However, he regained consistency in his
results, competing in Challenger tournaments where he won a title in Phoenix.
Berrettini crowned Comeback Player
Berrettini’s
ATP titles came few weeks after, starting in early April. After the Sunshine Double, he
returned to the winner’s circle by defeating Roberto Carballés Baena in the
final of the ATP 250 Marrakech Open.
He later secured consecutive titles at the Swiss Open Gstaad and Kitzbühel Open, achieving a 10-match winning streak before losing in
the first round of the Cincinnati Open to Holger Rune. During the grass season,
he also reached the final of the Stuttgart Open, where he lost to Jack Draper.
"I'm
just so happy to win the Comeback Player of the Year award," Berrettini
said in a message to fans. "Thank you very much for the support. It was a
great season, a great effort for me and my team. Obviously, so happy for the
results that we achieved and I cannot wait to step on the court in 2025 to get
more success."
"Thanks
again for your support. Without you guys, the fans, it wouldn't be possible,”
concluded the world No. 34.
Berrettini
will return to the tour at the upcoming Brisbane International, starting on
December 29, where he will compete alongside top names such as Novak Djokovic,
Holger Rune, Grigor Dimitrov, and the returning Nick Kyrgios, among others.
