Italy’s Jannik Sinner is now just one step away from achieving a unique milestone. The 23-year-old is already regarded as the best player currently playing in men’s tennis in the singles category.
Sinner is going through a fabulous season, which is why he is certain to finish as the number one player in men’s tennis in 2024, that too with points difference of more than 3000. The San Candido-born is now one step away from achieving a unique milestone. His last game of the season in the singles category will be in the Davis Cup against Australia’s Tallon Griekspoor.
If Sinner manages to avoid a straight-set defeat in that encounter, he will only become the second player in the history of men’s tennis in the singles category in the Open era to go a full season without losing a single match in straight sets. The only other player to achieve that was former world number one Roger Federer in 2005. The reigning world number one finished the season with three major titles to his name.
His first major competition in 2024 was the Australian Open, where he defeated Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the final in a five-set thriller with a score of 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3. He then lifted the US Open after beating America’s Taylor Fritz in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-4, 7-5. Sinner’s last major competition triumph in 2024 was the ATP Finals where he once again defeated Fritz in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-4. Sinner became the world number one this year during the French Open when the former world number one Serbia’s Novak Djokovic was forced to withdraw from the competition because of a knee injury, just before the start of quarterfinal against Norway’s Casper Ruud.
