Spellbinding Spanish hero Carlos Alcaraz has sent a message to his compatriots in the Euro 2024 final and it is very much over to you. The now four time Grand Slam champion defeated Novak Djokovic in epic fashion 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 to win Wimbledon back-to-back.
After being a child who called Wimbledon his dream, he has achieved that and it is very much one that he is buzzing about. Albeit with some expected nerves in closing out the match, he was utterly superb.
“Honestly it’s a dream for me. Winning this trophy. I did an interview when I was 11 years old. I said my dream is to win Wimbledon. I’m repeating my dream. I want to keep going. Obviously it’s a great feeling to play on this beautiful court. To lift this amazing trophy. For me this is the most beautiful tournament, most beautiful court.. and the most beautiful trophy," said Alcaraz.
Asked how he was able to win Roland Garros and Wimbledon back-to-back, it is all about the self belief. “I think just fighting and believing. I don’t know. It’s huge for me to be part of those players who have achieved it in the same year. Really glad to be in the same table as Novak. Huge champions did it. I don’t consider myself a champion yet like them. I’ll try to keep building my path and journey. It’s a huge moment for me.”
He also sent a message to Djokovic in sealing the win praising him for coming back so soon. “It’s been a difficult few weeks for you. You guys have done an unbelievable work. After the French Open having surgery.. you didn’t know if you’d be able to play this tournament. Making the final is a really great run. Feeling great physically. It’s been unbelievable. I was telling my team it’s something difficult to realize. I have huge respect for you and your team. Great job and keep going.”
But now it is onto the football and for Alcaraz, it is a front row seat with his team with hopes of a double triumph."With my team for sure. I watch it for sure. I’ve already done my job. So let’s see the football. It's going to be a really great match I guess. I watch it so let's see who's going to win the Euros."
