Former British player
Laura Robson has highlighted one
reason behind
Joao Fonseca’s behind impressive performances in the recent past.
The 18-year-old is already regarded as one for the future.
He recent featured in the Argentina Open and lifted the
competition after beating local favourite Francisco Cerundolo in straight sets
with a score of 6-4, 7-6. His most recent appearance came in the Rio Open where
he lost in the first round to Alexandre Muller in straight sets with a score of
6-1, 7-6.
Former British player Robson has recently written a column
for Sky Sports, in which she explained her point of view about a number of players.
She specifically spoke about Fonseca and explained why she has been his ‘big
fan’. Robson stated that one of the reasons why the 18-year-old has become a force to reckon with is because of having a ‘good head’ on his shoulders.
“Fonseca, meanwhile, got everyone excited in Australia,
because he plays such a big brand of tennis for an 18-year-old - his forehand
is absolutely huge - and the shot-making is what gets people fired up,” she
wrote. “It was just an amazing week for him to get his first ATP title in
Argentina this month, and hopefully he can build on that momentum going
forward. I first saw him play in person [when tournament director] at
Nottingham last year. He ended up losing to Billy Harris in a match that
started on grass and finished indoors… We ended up having to move them as it
was the only second round that hadn't finished yet due to horrific British
weather. After what was a tough day for him he still came and said thank you to
everyone that worked for the tournament. He's got a really good head on his
shoulders, and you want to see someone like that do well. So since last summer,
I've been a big fan, and have been hoping to see that breakthrough.”
