Jan-Lennard Struff kept Germany's hopes alive with a huge win over Cameron Norrie to make it 1-1 before we get the doubles a little bit later.
The first set was a very interesting and entertaining one with both of these players knowing the stakes of the match. Struff was the better player early as he went up 3-0 after a very slow start from Norrie. The Brit was rather tight at the beginning and the German used that to quickly go up. Once the Brit got loose he started playing much better and he was able to ultimately come back and make it 4-4.
Norrie continued playing great tennis and he actually went up 6-5 with a chance to win the set on his own serve. He failed to do so because he played conservative and Struff was able to hit some amazing shots in that game. In the tiebreak, the German rode the momentum winning it 8-6. It was a very close set but great play by Struff allowed him to win.
In the 2nd set, it was Norrie who was the better player and by a good margin. The Brit upped his intensity and Struff did not react to it well. Norrie cruised to a 6-3 finish exploiting the 2nd serve of Struff. The 3rd set opened better for Norrie as he had a break point early but it was Struff who found the breakthrough for a 4-2 lead. The German played aggressive tennis going for risky shots and he was making them. He closed it out with 6-2.
