The 'Fifth Grand Slam' is already underway. The stars are gathering in California looking for the trophy of the second major tournament of the season: Indian Wells 2025. Joao Fonseca, Learner Tien and Mirra Andreeva are among the youngsters who could make a big splash in the desert. Below we analyze their chances.

One of the favorite tournaments for both men and women has begun. At the BNP Paribas Open Indian Wells 2025, the top stars of the ATP and WTA circuit will be in action, looking to win one of the most prestigious trophies among the Masters 1000.

With the exception of Jannik Sinner, who is serving a suspension imposed by WADA for testing positive for clostebol in an anti-doping test last year, the rest of the Tour's top line-up will be seeing action in California;

While the Italian cleared up any doubts at the Australian Open, one thing that has become clear as the new season gets underway is that the youngsters are ready to take the next step.

WOMEN'S DRAW

Mirra Andreeva

In the case of the ladies, Mirra Andreeva, who is yet to turn 18, has already won her first WTA 1000, the Dubai Tournament. The Russian teenager has long been no surprise on the circuit, reaching for the first time among the top 10 tennis players on the planet.

It will be her second appearance at Tennis Paradise, after a fall in her debut at the Californian tournament in 2024. On that occasion, Andreeva, only 16 years old, reached the main draw of the event and faced local Katie Volynets, who managed to defeat her in a hard-fought 7-5, 7-5 match. Despite the early elimination, the young Russian would end up having her best season so far, winning in Iasi and taking the silver medal at the Paris Olympics;

The brand new champion of the WTA 1000 Dubai comes with a clear objective: to get into the top 5 of the ranking;

Her debut will be against Varvara Gracheva (#70); the Frenchwoman who has just eliminated the former number 2, Petra Kvitova. On paper, Andreeva, who will be playing her first official match as a top 10 player, appears to be an accessible opponent for Andreeva.

If she wins, she could face Clara Tauson of Denmark, another player who is in very good form in California. Naomi Osaka is also in that part of the draw. Each round promises to be tough, with stars like Rybakina, Pegula and Zheng Qinwen on the near horizon.

Diana Shnaider

Just a few years older than Andreeva, her compatriot Diana Shnaider is also a promising young player who could complicate the path of some of the top players. Unlike Andreeva, the number 13 of the WTA ranking has had better luck in the draw, being only Coco Gauff the top ten that would threaten her advance in Indian Wells already in the round of 16. It's a good opportunity for the 20-year-old to quickly turn the page after her disappointing loss to Sorana Cirstea in Austin.

Clara Tauson

The 22-year-old Dane, owner of a formidable serve, is currently ranked 22nd in the world and has had very good performances so far this season, reaching the third round in Australia, where she was eliminated by the number 1 Aryna Sabalenka. Immediately after she managed to advance to the semifinals in Linz, where she lost to Yastremska, and a few weeks ago she got the runner-up position in Dubai losing against Mirra Andreeva.

She will have a bye in the first round but her next opponent will be the winner of the match between Naomi Osaka and Camila Osorio, so she will have to give her best from the beginning if she wants to advance;

Andreeva herself could be her opponent in the third round, and in the round of 16, if logic holds true, she could face No. 7 Elena Rybakina.

MEN'S DRAW

Joao Fonseca

The young Brazilian Joao Fonseca is the great sensation of the Tour. Since the Next Gen ATP Finals in 2024 he has attracted all the attention and at 18 years of age many predict that he will be one of the animators of the circuit in the future;

His 2025 started brilliantly at the Australian Open, where he stormed through qualifying to meet No. 6-ranked Andrey Rublev in the first round. Against all odds, the 18-year-old outpaced his Russian opponent and sent him home early. The dream would come until the second round, where Lorenzo Sonego had to battle 5 long sets against the South American to beat him.

The first ATP title was not long in coming, just a month after the feat in Melbourne, Fonseca would win the Argentina Open, becoming one of the youngest players to lift the trophy in Buenos Aires. On his way to the title he defeated four local players, all better ranked than him;

He arrives at Indian Wells with a wildcard, looking to leave behind the bitter pill of losing at the Rio Open in the first round. His opponent in his debut will be the British Jacob Fearnley and if he succeeds, another player from the United Kingdom, Jack Draper, is waiting for him. If he advances, the number 4, Taylor Fritz, appears as a possible strong opponent for the round of 16.

Learner Tien

Another young player who has been making waves since the last Next Gen ATP Finals is the American Learner Tien. Because of his style of play and because he is a year older than Fonseca, perhaps he has gone a little unnoticed, but he has proven to be a real threat against higher level players. In Australia he defeated Daniil Medvedev in a dramatic 5-set match and last week, in Acapulco, he surprised Alexander Zverev himself in the round of 16.

In Indian Wells he will have a tough time from the start, making his debut against the tough Argentine Mariano Navone. If he manages to overcome him, he will have to face his compatriot Ben Shelton.

The 2025 season has already seen a number of surprises, and these young talents arrive on Californian soil with high aspirations. Will they make it to the top of the tournament?
