Karen Khachanov and
Grigor Dimitrov reached the 4th round of
Roland Garros following victories on Saturday.
Grigor Dimitrov is through to the 4th round of Roland Garros after a stellar display against Roberto Carballes Baena. He was aided in his effort by Roberto himself who retired after the conclusion of the 2nd set. Ultimately Dimitrov spent just 65 minutes on the court but even that was enough to show he was in great form. Dimitrov played great from the start as he won the 1st set 6-1 exceptional serving and good enough baseline play. He lost only one point on his 1st serve and added 9 winners.
The 2nd set was a bit better by Carballes Baena but still, it wasn't enough to overcome Dimitrov who kept playing his game. Dimitrov served as well if not better than in the 1st set but he also had more unforced errors (9) which kept things a bit closer. Nonetheless, it was good enough for a 6-3 victory for Grigor.
After that, Carballes Baena retired from the match. It's not yet clear whether it's an injury of simple exhaustion but it doesn't matter much. Karen Khachanov will be joining Dimitrov in the 4th round after his stellar showing against
Christian Garin. The Chilean has been a steady performer on clay but today he was simply bested by the Russian.
The match lasted two and a half hours and besides a small slip-off in the 2nd set Khachanov was the better player from start to finish. He crushed Garin the 1st set 6-2 before losing the 2nd one 6-3. After that, he returned to his 1st set level and never looked back winning the next two 6-4 6-2. He was very good on Garin's 2nd serve, attacking him repeatedly and forcing him to make many unforced mistakes (51). He himself was much better in that regard posting a respectable 34-32 winner to unforced error ratio.
