Switzerland’s Roger Federer and Spain’s Rafael Nadal are considered two of the greatest players in the history of men’s tennis in the singles category. Both players have now retired from professional tennis.
Federer retired from professional tennis back in September 2022 after struggling with fitness concerns. On his last outing in the sport, which was during the Laver Cup back, he and Nadal sat on the chair in tears. Those pictures went viral on the social media platforms.
On the other hand, Nadal retired from professional sport recently, similarly, after struggling with fitness concerns. His last participation was in the Davis Cup where he represented his country Spain and lost in the singles encounter. Ahead of the final appearance, Federer penned an emotional letter for Nadal in a post on the social media platform.
“Let’s start with the obvious: you beat me – a lot. More than I managed to beat you. You challenged me in ways no one else could,” he wrote. “You made me reimagine my game – even going so far as to change the size of my racket head, hoping for any edge. And you know what, Rafa, you made me enjoy the game even more. It meant everything to me that you were there by my side – not as my rival but as my doubles partner. Sharing the court with you that night, and sharing those tears, will forever be one of the most special moments of my career. And I want you to know that your old friend is always cheering for you, and will be cheering just as loud for everything you do next. Rafa that! Best always, your fan, Roger.”
Those emotional words once again sparked the debate among some in the tennis community about whether the two were actually friends during their playing days. Many would argue they were but Nadal, in a famous quote earlier in 2024, confirmed that at least on his part, he does not consider Federer as his friend but also admitted that both players respect the rivalry. "I wouldn't consider him a friend," Nadal confessed. "But someone familiar, with whom I have a great relationship."
