Former world number one Mats Wilander has predicted that Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz will remain ‘inconsistent’ throughout his career. The 21-year-old is already regarded as one of the best players currently playing in men’s tennis in the singles category, along with the likes of Italy’s Jannik Sinner.

Alcaraz has been going through a difficult phase. The reigning world number three most recently played in the Miami Open, where he was knocked out after losing in round 64 to Belgium’s David Goffin with a score of 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. It was the third consecutive event in which the young Spaniard did not manage to go all the way and secure the title.

The result proved to be a massive blow for Alcaraz in pursuit of claiming the top spot in the ATP rankings where he had a realistic chance to overthrowing Sinner who has been going through a three-month ban after agreeing a deal with the World Anti-Doping Agency for failing two dope tests in March last year.

Former world number one Wilander recently spoke to TNT Sports, as quoted by Tennis 365. In it, he predicted that Alcaraz would remain ‘inconsistent’ for the remainder of the season. He said that the four-time Grand Slam winner, however, would pull off ‘miracles’ every now and then.

“I think Carlos Alcaraz is going through what Carlos Alcaraz will be going through for the rest of his career, which is that there are going to be inconsistencies,” he said. “He’s going to pull off some miracles at times, and then those miracles are going to help him win matches, and he’s going to pull off miracles at different times, and he’s not going to win the match in the end. But obviously, if you lose the result against Jack Draper, the way that it happened is very weird for a top player. But I do think in the end, Carlos Alcaraz is going to be quite inconsistent in terms of results. We’re so used to not seeing a former world No 1 and most probably a future world No 1 to be that inconsistent.”
