Casper Ruud continued his remarkable second half of the season, as he swept past
Lorenzo Sonego in their quarterfinal clash at the
San Diego Open.
The Norwegian required an hour and 22 minutes to pull off the 6-1 6-4 victory, displaying the consistency and shot-making that saw him put on a stellar performance at the recently-concluded Laver Cup.
Ruud employed his speed and precision to frustrate his Italian opponent, obtaining an early break before running away with the first set after just 35 minutes. Sonego attempted a comeback in the second set, but failed to build any momentum as he was unable to develop a rhythm. A single break in the second set was all it took for Rudd to grasp control, closing out the match after Sonego sent another forehand long.
The second seed improves to 2-0 in career meetings against Sonego, and awaits the winner between Grigor Dimitrov and Aslan Karatsev.
