L'Equipe has shared some details about the recent surgery of Novak Djokovic, the 24-time Grand Slam champion. The surgical procedure was performed at the prestigious Clinique du Sport in Paris and was led by renowned surgeon Antoine Gerometta.
According to the report, Djokovic made the decision to undergo surgery after just a few minutes of consideration. The operation, which involved the removal of a bucket-handle meniscus tear, lasted a total of 15 minutes. This swift intervention demonstrates the efficiency and precision of the medical team at the Parisian clinic.
Recovery and upcoming tournaments
Despite the surgery, Djokovic has no plans to take an extended break. The Serbian intends as per the report to return to the courts at the ATP 500 in Hamburg European Open, which begins on July 13, before participating in the Olympics.
Djokovic made the quick decision to undergo surgery after withdrawing from the quarterfinals of the French Open. The procedure was specifically to treat a condition known as a bucket-handle meniscus tear, where a fragment of the meniscus displaces within the knee, causing pain and limited movement.
The surgery, although brief, is crucial to ensure that Djokovic can return to tennis without major complications. Antoine Gerometta, the surgeon in charge, is recognized for his expertise in treating elite athletes, ensuring that Djokovic was in good hands.
With the ATP 500 in Hamburg on his schedule, Djokovic is eager to return to competition and demonstrate his ability to recover quickly from this procedure. Additionally, his participation in the Olympics is highly anticipated, as he seeks to add an Olympic medal to his impressive career.

In the past day, I had to make some tough decisions after sustaining a meniscus tear during my last match. I’m still processing it all but I am happy to update you that the surgery went well. I am so appreciative of the team of doctors who have been by my side…
