Former German tennis player
Andrea Petkovic believes the
current world number two
Alexander Zverev has no psychological issues when it
comes to winning a Grand Slam. The 27-year-old is regarded as one of the most
high-profile players currently playing in men’s tennis in the singles category,
had a rough day in the grand finale of the
Australian Open 2025.
The reigning world number two came second best against the
current world number one Italy’s Jannik Sinner in straight sets with a score of
6-3, 7-6, 6-3. It was the third time Zverev ended up on the losing side in the
final of a Grand Slam. In 2020, he finished as the runner-up at the US Open
after losing to Dominic Thiem in a five-set thriller with a score of 2–6, 4–6,
6–4, 6–3, 7–6.
Four years later, in 2024, he lost in the final of the
French Open to Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in another five-set thriller with a score
of 6–3, 2–6, 5–7, 6–1, 6–2. After that result, Zverev admitted that he might
not be ‘good enough’ to win a major tournament. Former German player Petkovic
has been recently quoted in a report where she dismissed the narrative that
Zverev has some psychological issues when it comes to winning a major title. She
was also of the opinion that the Hamburg-born star will eventually lift a major
title soon.
“I don’t think that
Sascha’s problem is psychological, because if he had this problem, how could he
have reached the second place in the world?" she said. “He himself has
everything necessary for a great triumph. I am convinced that Alexander has the
mental strength for such a triumph, as well as all the shots, but the question
is whether he believes in it himself. He will have to solve this problem. I am
optimistic and I am convinced that sooner or later he will achieve it.”
